Cube aquarium with twisted driftwood, moss and stones, built by Nifty

Four ways to build one.

Every tank is made for its room, but most start as one of these. All four photos are our own work.

  1. Framed aquarium set into the wall beside a curved staircase

    Built into a wall

The tank sits inside the wall and only the glass shows, framed like a picture. It takes no floor space, so it suits living rooms, stairwells and office cabins.

  2. Rimless planted aquarium with red and green stem plants over a moss carpet

    Planted

Live plants, wood and stone laid out like a small landscape. Calm to look at and kind to the fish, with lighting and CO2 matched to the plants.

  3. Saltwater reef aquarium with live rock and corals

    Saltwater

Live rock, corals and the brightest fish. It asks for more equipment and more care than freshwater, so we plan the filtration and the upkeep with you first.

  4. L shaped aquarium coffee table with a glass top in an office

    Part of the furniture

A coffee table, a cabinet, a column in a lobby. The tank is built as the piece itself, so it earns its place in the room twice.

What the space needs.

Three things decide where a tank can go. We check all of them at the site visit, before anything is designed.

  • 1 kg per litre

Water is heavy. A 500 litre tank weighs well over half a tonne once the glass, rock and cabinet are in. We check the floor first.

  • 1 power point

Filter, light and heater all need power close by, on a point that stays on.

  • 0 hours of direct sun

Sunlight heats the water and feeds algae, so we place the tank away from windows that catch it.

What decides the cost.

No two rooms are the same, so we do not quote from a price list. We see the space, then quote for that space and nothing else.

Questions people ask.

How long does a custom aquarium take?

It depends on the size and how it is built into the room, so you get a timeline after the site visit. Once it is installed, the water needs a few weeks to settle before fish go in. We look after that part.

What affects the cost?

The size, the glass, the cabinet, the filtration and lighting, and how much work the space needs. We quote after the site visit, so the price fits your space and nothing else.

Freshwater or saltwater?

Freshwater tanks are easier to look after and suit most homes and offices. Saltwater tanks are more colourful and need more care. Tell us what you have in mind and we will help you choose.

What happens after installation?

We check the water while it settles, help you add the first fish, and offer maintenance plans so the tank stays clear.

Where in the room can it go?

Almost anywhere with a solid floor and a power point close by. We keep tanks out of direct sunlight, which heats the water and feeds algae. All of this gets checked at the site visit.

How heavy is an aquarium?

Water weighs one kilo a litre, so a 500 litre tank with its glass, rock and cabinet comes to well over half a tonne. We look at the floor before we design anything.

How much looking after does it need?

Feeding every day, and a proper clean and water change on a regular schedule. If you would rather not do that yourself, our monthly and annual maintenance visits cover it.

What happens in a power cut?

A healthy tank is fine through a short cut. If your area has long ones, tell us about your backup power at the site visit and we will plan the filter and air pump around it.

Can you look after a tank you did not build?

Yes. Message us on WhatsApp with a photo of the tank and we will tell you what it needs.

Do you work with interior designers and architects?

Yes. Bring us in while the room is still on paper and we will give your designer the size, weight and power the tank needs.

Tell us about your space.

A few details and we will come and see it. The quote follows the site visit, so it fits your room and nothing else.
